Motivating oneself to make empowered choices to your lifestyle such as losing weight can sometimes be a challenge. I know, I once weighed over 200lbs. However with the right mindset you can achieve your goals by simply believing you are worth the effort. I did.
After losing 70 lbs initially (10 years ago) thanks Weight Watchers, I thought after our baby was born it would be no problem to lose the 70lbs gained while pregnant. Well it hasn’t been as fast or easy as the first time around since there is not so much “extra” time I had before to exercise whenever I desired. However, I still make time to fit “mommy fitness” time in, even if it 15-20 minutes.
I’m definitely on the right track on losing the weight again (have 30lbs to go) but there are days that keeping motivated can be sidetracked by my new reality – full time work + motherhood.
As I try to encourage my clients that the number on the scale isn’t the best method to monitor weight loss, it is a tool one can use (coupled with another method) to monitor their success. Trust me, there are times when I say “eff you scale” as I storm out of the bathroom. However, as I begin to get dressed my clothes are fitting looser and my “muffin top” is getting smaller –> BONUS!!!!
Here are a few simple and inexpensive method’s to monitor your weight loss.
Take your measurements
Use a measuring tape to measure the circumference around your chest (nipple level), waist (belly button level), hips (widest part), buttocks, thigh and arm (widest part) is a simple and inexpensive method to monitor inches lost. There are concerns from doctor’s and health care professionals when the ratio around the waist is larger than that of the hips as it can lead to serious conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Monitoring the changes in these numbers will not only help you keep focused but aware of a couple conditions that your excess weight distribution may cause.
Using a caliper (instrument that measures fat) to measure skinfolds are taken from various points on the body. Depending on the protocol you may have 3, 6 or even more skinfolds taken. The more the better as it will give a better reading since we all carry our weight differently. Note: this test has its flaws as it depends on the accuracy of the person taking the measurements, the amount of water you are retaining and women, if you are on your menstral cycle. This can be done at your local gym or fitness facility.
As mentioned the scale combined with another method can be act as a useful tool to monitor weight loss. DO NOT become obsessed with the numbers on the scale. If your clothes are fitting differently (for the better) or your energy has increased such as popping out of bed in the morning ready to get your day started then your onto something good.
Keep in mind that muscle weighs more than fat as well as fat takes up more surface space than muscle. Although the numbers do not suggest you have lost weight you may be toning and getting leaner. Don’t be discouraged. For those that have more weight to lose, the scale can be a means to keep you on track (it did for me with my first successful Weight Watchers quest), every little bit counts.
How do your clothes fit? Are they less snug in all the right places? Do you feel your physical change requires you to go down another size? These are a few questions to ask yourself or that you will notice when the inches keep coming off your body. Clothes Don’t Lie.
Increased Energy & Better Mood
Are you starting to walk with a spring in your step with shoulders back and head held high? Have you introduced another day of exercise into your current schedule? Can you handle little stresses far better than say…10lbs ago? Has your focus increased? Reduced fat and increased muscle reduces the level of fatigue your body feels when having to carry extra unhealthy weight around. Feeling better about the positive changes you are making to your body, mind and soul would give anyone a positive energy boost.
Daily Activities Are Easier
Are you less fatigued after climbing a flight of stairs? After a cleaning, shopping and running around with the kids to you still feel like you have energy for YOU!? If so…grrrrreeeat! Another sign that your body is adapting to your healthier choices.
Compliments, compliments and more compliments
Are you and/or others noticing the changes in your silhouette? We can be our own worst critic as we see ourselves everyday. However the kind words from others noticing your physical changes speaks loud and clear to those on the weight loss journey.
